Stuff: Honda’s new Formula R

Honda and Phillips 66 are heading to SEMA with a new line of synthetic oils.

While Nissan just showed some big-ass trucks as part of its 2025 SEMA teaser materials, Honda is opting to reveal something much, much smaller.

Those of us who live and breathe old Hondas know that you use Honda fluids wherever possible—especially their transmission fluids. So I’m wondering if the same will hold true with its just-announced line of synthetic oil, officially called HRC Formula R.

Now the red bottle and snazzy “R” are obviously plays at stoking the same warm and fuzzy feelings we get when looking at old (and new!) Civic Type Rs. And in a move that should shock absolutely no one, these fluids will be the officially recommended lubricants for the current Civic Type R and Acura Integra Type S.

This line of synthetic oils was developed in conjunction with Phillips 66 and uses the same technologies and chemistries as the oils used in Honda/Acura race vehicles. Honda is saying that the full line of Formula R products will hit Honda and Acura dealers in Spring 2026, and will be available in the usual performance car-friendly viscosities.
